Happy Birthday To Me From Google
I got a happy little surprise today when I signed into my Google Account to do some pre-August finance calculations. Google had actually changed their logo just for me!
While this may seem like nothing more than a simple gesture from the search engine juggernaut, to me it’s a testament to the power of their systems and the importance of social media both today and in the future. This was made possible due to the information provided to them via my Google Profile. Information that is available to them and anyone else on their ever expanding network. Information that can be used for good or EVIL. Google is laying the foundation today because like us and many other savvy businesses out there they know that Social Media is not a fad. It’s the next evolution in a form of marketing that has existed since the birth of the internet.
Stay with me, dear readers, I’d like to take you all on a journey through time …

10 years before the internet was fully commercialised, people were still being social ‘online’ with the use of Bulletin Board Systems, otherwise known as BBS. Some systems even allowed the transfer of data such as messages, files, etc. These systems were the first of their kind, allowing users from all across the planet to share resources, experiences, and recommendations … sound familiar?

Right now we are living in a time where we can bear witness to the real rise of social media. Its everywhere! On our computers, our mobile phones, on our advertisements, etc. Instead of the phone number taking the prime real estate on the company car, websites and even @twitter names are moving in. In terms of websites, some businesses are even starting to create their business portals on Facebook as opposed to starting a traditional website.
The information provided to companies like Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and others is slowly but surely being cataloged, shared and stored. Systems like Google AdWords and Facebook Ads use this information to build demographics that help them better serve their clients by only showing their ads to their target audience. Expect these systems to evolve quickly!

Social Media’s 9 year mission to seek out new users and connect with new organisations will boldly send it into its golden age. By this time computers and the internet will be fully integrated with almost all facets of our life. Our TVs, cars, houses, fridges, shoes, pets – everything will be connected and the information collected from all these soucres will be used by companies and organisations across the planet to help provide almost precise advertisements based on real-time demographics. When your car is running low on fuel you will hear a commercial through your radio for the nearby Shell service station, food ads on billboards will change as you walk by based on the information collected from your fridge. Who knows, perhaps on my 38th Birthday I will be getting targeted ads on my Playstation 7b to book a birthday cruise on the USS Googleplex.
Social media has always been around and ever evolving, even if people didn’t realise. The fact of the matter is if your not utilising this powerful resource, especially now during the rise of mainstream social media, then your going to have a hard time keeping your business competitive.
Believe the hype. Happy Birthday everyone!
