On Page SEO – Part 2

Welcome back to my Monday blog post! Wooo!! For those of you who don’t know, my blog post topics are all based around SEO, both on page and off page. There isn’t one be all end all factor that will increase a website’s rankings, so I encourage you to look through this and my previous posts for advice. Please add a comment if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them accordingly.

This week’s topic will largely be a follow up on last week’s post on the most important on page ranking factors. Not too many people note these down on other blogs, but they are my personal favorites. 

1. Content – It is imperative that the content created on any webpage is written with a goal in mind.  One goal you might have is to rank for a certain keyword. If this is your goal, then you will need to keep writing content relevant and related to that keyword.  It is also best to break up the page with headings: h2s and perhaps h3s further down the page to create a well structured layout.  If your goal is to convert, you need to write about one call to action, or one focus. 

It is no use writing content for a page and afterwards deciding to target keywords.  The content won’t flow and people who land on that page will simply bounce.  It is also important that if you are trying to rank for a keyword on a page, that the images align with the keyword, and that they are tagged with appropriate attributes.

2. Sitewalk – Optimises the internal linking structure of the website, by allowing a site-wide link with the keyword anchor text & link title.  You can play with this a lot, and is one of the best way to sculpt authority throughout the site.  The top navigation of the site is normally created for users in mind and therefore the keywords used throughout the nav might not align with desired ranking keywords.  This is where the sitewalk comes into play.  It is designed specifically for search engines, you would very rarely include an “About Us” or “Contact Us” link throughout the sitewalk and if you did it should be no followed.

3. Strong tagging – Although this is an old SEO method and doesn’t particularly do too much to effect positive rankings, the amount of time required to type <strong> is worth the extra 2 seconds.  I personally haven’t seen too much evidence myself that strong tagging does much.  However, I do like the idea of emphasising keywords throughout the text.  For the same reason that I like headings – they make the page look nice and pretty.

4. Good blog post titles! This is one topic that I rarely seen done correctly and of course I am guilty of this as well.  If you are a follower of E-Web’s blogs, or perhaps of my personal ones, you might have read it on a number of occasions before.  When you are creating a blog with the idea of driving traffic (not just to increase the page count of the site) you MUST research the keywords being used and think about what a user would type in when searching for it. This is because the title of your post is what is most likely to rank! 

For example: If I was looking to buy a wedding cake, I wouldn’t enter into Google “The most important part of a wedding”, I would instead search for something like “Wedding cakes ideas” or “Best wedding cakes 2011”. The title of your posts should therefore reflect what your target users are searching for, so your posts can rank for those search terms.

5. No Follows – This is a very important part of link molding.  This is especially important if you have a very large website that has many internal links.  If you have a website with 10000 pages, on every single page you have a Contact us page & an about us page, that is 20000 internal links – 20000!!! The way I think of this is as of a % of the internal link juice.  In a more simple scenario, if you have a site with 10 pages, and on each page this is 10 links, that is 10×10 (assuming that every page links to itself) if you no follow 2 of these, each other page’s authority will increase by 25% – which is a fair amount. 

That is 10 pages x 100% authority = 10%
No follow 2 pages = 20% from each page
100%/80% =12.5%
= 25% increase – From 10% to 12.5%
